Fifteen minutes later, in the music room of the chateau, the couple were married under the rites of the Church of England by the vicar of St Bride’s, Doncaster. The room had been hastily converted to a chapel and the Duke and Duchess knelt in front of an old oak chest which served as an altar. Later, after a buffet wedding breakfast, the newly married couple left for their honeymoon in Austria. The Duke issued a statement which said: ‘After the trying times we have been through we now look forward to a happy and useful private life’ . . .
